My name is David Beuttel and I am a Senior Communication Studies major at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois. I went to high school in Heyworth, Illinois where I found my true passion and the career I wanted to pursue. It was the beginning of Sophomore year in a media class where each student is in charge of two projects during the year that have to be centered around media skills learned, student needs and community needs. The project that I came up with was a web broadcasting program that would broadcast basketball games online for virtually everyone to watch. I created a website and by basketball season I had a microphone and a camera that I controlled on my own and broadcasted my first basketball game; complete with play-by-play commentating. By the end of my senior year, the broadcasting team consisted of a six man crew and filmed football, volleyball and both men’s and women’s basketball. After seeing my plan unfold and how I developed my skills as a broadcaster, I realized that this is what I wanted to do as a career. I hope to continue my broadcasting skills into a career in sports casting or becoming a news anchor. My goal is to develop skills in this field a long with characteristics needed to be successful; such as leadership, organization and creativity. At Monmouth College and through two great internships, I have been able to learn the ropes of sports anchoring and reporting. This portfolio is a collection of some of my work that I have done as a Communication Studies major. You will see how I used my knowledge that I learned in the classroom to create skillful messages that are professional and executed well. My passion has only grown and I can’t wait to be able to do what I love professionally. I have learned and developed skills that will help me in the future. Skills like: script writing, interview and b-roll camera shots, anchoring skills, video editing and verbal skills. All of these things will help me achieve my career goals.
